Abstract

Karnataka's history is distinguished by remarkable political continuity amid repeated changes of dynasty, language, religion and territorial organization. Situated between the western coast and the Deccan interior, the region linked maritime trade with inland agrarian and urban networks. This paper examines the principal stages of Karnataka's historical development: early state formation under the Kadambas and Gangas; imperial expansion under the Chalukyas and Rashtrakutas; the cultural achievements of the Hoysalas and Vijayanagara; the rise of Mysore; colonial transformation; and linguistic unification in the twentieth century. Rather than treating dynastic succession as the whole of history, the study emphasizes institutions, irrigation, commerce, temple patronage, literary production and social negotiation. It argues that Karnataka emerged not from a single kingdom or homogeneous tradition, but through the long interaction of Kannada-speaking communities with Sanskritic, Jain, Virashaiva, Vaishnava, Islamic, Christian and modern constitutional cultures. The unification of 1956 brought together territories shaped by different administrations, while the renaming of Mysore State as Karnataka in 1973 gave symbolic recognition to a wider historical geography. Karnataka's past therefore reveals a durable pattern: regional identity grew through adaptation and synthesis while retaining Kannada language and memory as important sources of cohesion.
