Abstract

Inflation is one of the most important macroeconomic variables affecting household welfare, consumption, savings and economic stability. This paper examines the relationship between inflation and household consumption in India, with particular emphasis on consumer prices, food and fuel inflation, purchasing power, savings behaviour and monetary policy. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical methodology based on secondary sources including government publications, Reserve Bank of India reports and established economic literature. It argues that inflation affects households differently according to income, location and consumption patterns. Lower-income households are particularly vulnerable to increases in essential commodity prices because necessities account for a larger share of their expenditure. The paper also examines India's flexible inflation-targeting framework and discusses fiscal, monetary and supply-side measures for maintaining price stability while supporting sustainable growth.
