Abstract

Internet of Things applications must often process observations despite limited bandwidth, variable connectivity, and restricted device resources. Edge computing places selected computation near data sources, creating opportunities for timely responses and continued local operation. These opportunities depend on workload placement, state management, and failure recovery rather than proximity alone. This narrative review examines four foundational publications on edge computing, fog architecture, and edge intelligence. It develops a conceptual framework for environmental monitoring across institutional buildings. The framework separates local event processing from remote historical analysis and defines how observations should be buffered, synchronized, and evaluated. Aproposed experimental protocol compares cloud centered, edge centered, and hybrid configurations under identical workloads and controlled network interruptions. No new implementation, field measurements, or performance improvements are reported. The paper argues that credible assessment must include tail latency, observation loss, recovery behavior, energy boundaries, and maintenance cost. Edge computing is most defensible when a defined local requirement justifies the operational complexity of distributed infrastructure.
