Abstract

Karnataka’s history is best understood not as a succession of dynasties but as a long process through which political power, language, religion, agrarian expansion, commerce, and regional memory interacted. From the early historic networks of the Deccan to the unification of the Kannada-speaking territories in 1956, the region repeatedly combined local institutions with wider imperial formations. This paper examines the major phases of Karnataka history with particular attention to state formation, cultural synthesis, and the making of a modern regional identity. It argues that Karnataka’s historical distinctiveness arose from three connected developments: the durability of local agrarian and corporate institutions; the capacity of courts and religious establishments to support multiple languages and traditions; and the continuing reconstruction of Kannada identity across changing political boundaries. The paper also considers the contributions of the Kadambas, Gangas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara rulers, the Wodeyars of Mysore, the colonial state, and the linguistic unification movement. By bringing political, social, economic, literary, and architectural history together, the study shows that Karnataka developed through negotiation and synthesis rather than isolation.
