Abstract

Urbanization is one of the most significant processes of social transformation in contemporary India. The expansion of cities, migration, industrialization, educational mobility, women's participation in paid employment, changing occupational structures and increasing individual aspirations have influenced the organization and functioning of the Indian family. However, the relationship between urbanization and family change cannot be adequately explained as a simple transition from the joint family to the nuclear family. Kinship obligations, intergenerational support, marriage practices and family solidarity frequently continue even when family members reside in separate households. This paper examines the relationship between urbanization and changing family structures in India from a sociological perspective. Based primarily on secondary sources, the study uses a descriptive and analytical approach and draws upon theories of modernization, structural functionalism and perspectives developed within Indian sociology. It examines changes in household composition, marriage, gender roles, intergenerational relationships, elderly care, migration and family functions. The analysis suggests that urbanization has contributed to greater residential nuclearization, occupational and geographical mobility and renegotiation of traditional gender and generational roles. Nevertheless, the extended family has not disappeared. Instead, Indian families increasingly demonstrate flexible and adaptive arrangements in which geographically dispersed members remain socially, emotionally and economically connected. The study concludes that contemporary Indian family change should be understood as a process of restructuring and adaptation rather than family disintegration.
