Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital technology has transformed the structure of social interaction in contemporary India. Smartphones, social networking platforms, digital payments, online education, e-governance, and internet-based employment have become increasingly embedded in everyday life. These developments have altered how individuals communicate, construct identities, maintain family relationships, participate in communities, access institutions, and engage with economic opportunities. At the same time, digital transformation has produced new forms of inequality based on income, gender, education, age, geography, language, and digital literacy. This paper examines digital transformation from a sociological perspective, with particular attention to its influence on family relationships, youth culture, education, employment, community life, social inequality, and identity formation in India. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical methodology based primarily on secondary sources, including books, research literature, institutional reports, and sociological theories. Concepts associated with Manuel Castells, Anthony Giddens, Pierre Bourdieu, Erving Goffman, and other social theorists are used to interpret the changing relationship between technology and society. The paper argues that digitalisation should not be understood merely as technological progress. It represents a wider social transformation in which established patterns of interaction are being reorganised. Digital technology can increase social connectivity, access to information, and economic participation, but its benefits remain unevenly distributed. Asociologically informed approach to digital development must therefore combine technological expansion with digital literacy, social inclusion, privacy protection, gender equality, and equitable access.
